Recently the IRS expanded it Fresh Start Initiative to help struggling taxpayers who owe taxes. The Fresh Start Penalty Relief Initiative gives eligible taxpayers a six-month extension to pay their taxes in full. Interest still applies until the tax is fully paid, however failure to pay penalties will not accrue. The new threshold for requesting an installment agreement has been raised from $25,000 to $50,000. With an installment agreement you will pay less in penalties, but interest will continue to accrue on the outstanding balance until the tax is paid in full. In some instances you may qualify for an Offer in Compromise, which is an agreement between a taxpayer and the IRS that allows the taxpayer to settle for less than the amount originally owed.
