It was great to watch a black film without a feeling of dread. In his good-natured feature debut “Uncorked,” writer/director Prentice Penny (“Insecure,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) sets out to challenge and change these optics, braiding a formulaic father-and-son tale with a gifted African-American sommelier-to-be’s pursuit of his advanced palate. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service. But that’s a relatively small complaint when the rest of Uncorked is so beautifully executed. The story seemed like a standard trope: father has successful business, works hard and wants his son to take over the business, but the son has other ideas. Athie, Vance, and Nash are all doing terrific work, which only adds to what a film like this is capable of. As Louis and Elijah try to coexist, Vance and Athie get a chance to show off their acting chops. What I really appreciate it about this movie was that it was towed from a Black perspective it wasn't the typical black story so to speak. The film’s vigorous (and by all means, mouth-watering) opening sequence economically represents the world in which he dwells through a bit of slick editing—on one hand, there is the BBQ joint ran by his father, Louis (a coolly authoritative Courtney B. Vance), and on the other, there are the velvety pours Elijah sells and studies with enthusiasm while dreaming of becoming a master sommelier one day.

Amazing plot!
Uncorked is a surprisingly delightful and original film that explores the niche topic of winery expertise, and still finds a way to tell a heartfelt story of family and dreams. Forgot your password? Uncorked is modest in its ambition but the smoothness it achieves is of the highest order. It's a far cry from the tired and racist tropes that litter many movies, even to this day. “A Pinot Grigio is like Kanye West,” he suggests. This is a film about a father and son coming to terms with each others’ choices and learning to find a way forward, mixing tears and laughter together for an affecting ride. And music. Okay, so I want to become a master sommelier. It's nice to watch a movie about a black man in America immersed in black culture that isn't centered on violence and hip hop music.
