It was great to watch a black film without a feeling of dread. In his good-natured feature debut “Uncorked,” writer/director Prentice Penny (“Insecure,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”) sets out to challenge and change these optics, braiding a formulaic father-and-son tale with a gifted African-American sommelier-to-be’s pursuit of his advanced palate. Please reference “Error Code 2121” when contacting customer service. But that’s a relatively small complaint when the rest of Uncorked is so beautifully executed. The story seemed like a standard trope: father has successful business, works hard and wants his son to take over the business, but the son has other ideas. Athie, Vance, and Nash are all doing terrific work, which only adds to what a film like this is capable of. As Louis and Elijah try to coexist, Vance and Athie get a chance to show off their acting chops. Uncorked, now on Netflix, made me laugh out loud three or four times. |, June 22, 2020 Though the writer-director doesn’t delve too deeply into the classism that can be present in the world of food, the faint undertones of it still help Uncorked feel richer. What I really appreciate it about this movie was that it was towed from a Black perspective it wasn't the typical black story so to speak. The film’s vigorous (and by all means, mouth-watering) opening sequence economically represents the world in which he dwells through a bit of slick editing—on one hand, there is the BBQ joint ran by his father, Louis (a coolly authoritative Courtney B. Vance), and on the other, there are the velvety pours Elijah sells and studies with enthusiasm while dreaming of becoming a master sommelier one day.

Her scenes with Mamoudou Athie are pure joy!

Things come to a head when he has the opportunity to travel to Paris with his student friends to finesse his skills and - with the help of a family fund-raiser - he just about manages to get there (going halves with his friend) before his cancer-stricken mother causes all concerned to reappraise their priorities. Then he likens a Chardonnay, “the granddaddy of wines,” to Jay-Z and a Riesling to Drake. I am myself definitely understood the message with him wanting to continue pursuing what he set out to do and I appreciated that. Regal No, that's a Somalian.

Moving coming-of-age story has mature themes, cursing. Once introduced to the family, we finally meet the film's lead in a liquor store stocking wine, clearly knowledgeable and passionate. Uncorked movie reviews & Metacritic score: Fueled by his love for wine, Elijah enrolls in a course to become a master sommelier, an elite designation given only to … Netflix’s Uncorked made me laugh out loud during a time of crisis, Netflix’s The Wrong Missy doesn’t make a big enough fool out of David Spade, Netflix’s Extraction trades Chris Hemsworth’s charms for buckets of blood, The Platform is the best/worst horror movie for a shelter-in-place era, Alan Yang’s Tigertail struggles to balance the past with the present, WWE’s The Main Event is the best kind of kid movie, Coffee & Kareem is hard-R comedy with a kid’s sense of humor, Love Wedding Repeat ruins two good genres with one dumb twist, Lost Girls almost gets lost in literal darkness, Spenser Confidential lets Mark Wahlberg be too Mark Wahlberg, Like romance itself, To All the Boys sequel is cute and frustrating, The Letter for the King has all the pieces of a great fantasy epic, but isn’t one, The interactive Carmen Sandiego adventure is for winning, not exploring, I Am Not Okay With This subverts the superpowered-teenager story. This film could have been so much better and more interesting (actually a very good story!) I wanted to give a 10 but the music in the film was terrible!!! | A film with a smile and a tear. In the days where we’re all cooped up at home, there are certainly worse things you could do than settling in front of this pleasant film and its upbeat musical tracks (original music by Hit Boy) with a positive attitude and a smooth bottle of wine. | Rating: 2.5/4 The percentage of Approved Tomatometer Critics who have given this movie a positive review.

Amazing plot!

Uncorked is a surprisingly delightful and original film that explores the niche topic of winery expertise, and still finds a way to tell a heartfelt story of family and dreams. Forgot your password? Uncorked is modest in its ambition but the smoothness it achieves is of the highest order. A member of the New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC), she regularly contributes to RogerEbert.com, Variety and Time Out New York, with bylines in Filmmaker Magazine, Film Journal International, Vulture, The Playlist and The Wrap, among other outlets. We all should be paying attention. This is a very simple and very lightweight [comedy], but charming in its own way. First-time feature writer-director Prentice Penny maintains a superbly intimate atmosphere that offers glimpses into the minds and emotions of the characters, tracing a young man's journey as he chases his dream. Very good main actor. The small details provide such entertainment; the back & forth banter between the father & son make for a great balance of tension with humor. | Rating: 5/5

It's a far cry from the tired and racist tropes that litter many movies, even to this day. “A Pinot Grigio is like Kanye West,” he suggests. This is a film about a father and son coming to terms with each others’ choices and learning to find a way forward, mixing tears and laughter together for an affecting ride. And music. Okay, so I want to become a master sommelier. It's nice to watch a movie about a black man in America immersed in black culture that isn't centered on violence and hip hop music. Don't have an account? Good job Prentice Penny. No rush at the end to tie things up. However, at its core, Uncorked is a look into the inner workings of a complicated father/son relationship. Cinemark A fresh perspective with a dose of originality.
