Rose McGowan's character Amy is the closest thing to a cult/trash queen we saw in the 90's and her naked body is always a joy to behold. But can any amount of sex lift the sense of doom hanging over them? More than any other filmmaker making movies about the new “kids” generation, it seems to me that Araki -- with both Doom and Totally F***ked Up -- has his finger tuned most acutely to the human pulse and not just the lens shutter. It's obvious so much time and energy was spent perfecting the crazy/sexy/cool look and feel of the movie, that the story, acting and the (cringe-inducing)dialog were duly sacrificed to achieve some kind of pop culture statement. The trouble is, it has a hard time even doing that. While I hate to prattle on about hidden meanings and messages that do not exist or that are not intended, Araki (unlike most film makers) is sophisticated enough to actually put such elements in his films. The opening credits claim this is a `heterosexual' movie by Gregg Araki Now that statement is still open for discussion. And he does not strike me as so full of himself that he would do this with no purpose other than mind games. Guilt is for married, old people! I admit this film looks pretty simple and exploitative, but art fans are supposed to be detail-attentive, open-minded, and deep-thinking, and, unless you're all of those, this film won't do anything for you but show you a world of sex and violence. Self-consciously strives for transgressive nihilism without ever recognizing the sheer absurdity of its every component. He would be more honest and probably make a better movie if he got down in the trenches with the rest of us. The crudities never end. Oh, yeah. That may sound blatant, simple, and ridiculous, but I myself have heard different theories on what the meaning behind that quote was. I'd say about 97% of the class disliked to downright hated this movie.
