The Minnesota trio's stark sound has evolved--ever so slightly--since their 1994 debut, I Could Live in Hope . Voluptuous strings, softly fuzzy guitars, and propulsive percussion suffuse songs like the sweetly melancholy opener "Sunflower" and the slo-mo pop of "Dinosaur Act" and "July" with a warmth and direction that Low's best work has always hinted at.
I heard a couple of cuts on some compilation albums and really dig what I call "down folk." Things We Lost in the Fire also features more of Low's understated stylistic experiments: The slightly jazzy harmonies and tempo of "Medicine Magazines" add a bit of swing to the group's usually steady rhythms, while "Kind of Girl" delves into earthy yet ethereal chamber folk. Over the course of their career, Low's glacially beautiful music has gradually melted into something much more accessible and intimate. Some great stuff. I just stumbled upon Low in the last few months. The songs tend to be slow, gentle and bittersweet, sometimes slightly folksy, sometimes early rock (evoking images of broken-hearted girls in pink poodle skirts), sometimes almost lullaby. Low has even begun to express a sense of wonder and, gasp, happiness. Alles over Things we lost in the fire - Low, CD Album en alle andere muziekalbums CD, Vinyl, LP… Just discovered Low. Bought this for my son since he is a real fan of Low. About a year and a half ago I heard THE GREAT DESTROYER and was blown away by it, picking it up instantly. What a glorious way to go. Especially wonderful on vinyl. I proceeded to purchase another ten Low CDs on Amazon and this is still my favorite album of the bunch. Their DVD "Low in Europe" is great, too.
This is a great album all the way through--very cohesive and catchy on my first listen.
The finale, "In Metal," evolves from a melancholy ballad into one of the group's sunniest, most kinetic songs, mirroring the overall transformation of their music. Rest assured that they will still keep you company on rainy days when it's all gone wrong and even the brighter moments are tinged with melancholy.
